Holly Robinson Peete rips on 50 Cent for autism tweets
Rapper 50 Cent ended up in hot water on the Fourth by drawing the ire of parents of autistic children, who flooded his Twitter feed with pictures of their children after he told one follower, "I just saw your picture fool you look autistic." No, wait, it gets better.
When @yung_raditz wrote "Release the album or get shot again," referring to 50 Cent's oft-delayed album Five (Murder By Numbers), Curtis jackson was a bit hasty in his reply. He also tweeted "I don't want no special ed kids on my time line follow some body else." Yikes.
That was too much for Holly Robinson Peete, actress wife of former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete and founder of the HollyRod Foundation, which supports autistic children like her own teenage son, RJ Peete. She ripped 50 Cent in an open letter on the foundation's web site.
"I’ve met you in passing over the years and I know you are a bright, astute businessman and legitimate philanthropist so it is with a bit of sincere confusion that I ask you… Do you even know what autism is? And what exactly does "autistic" look like? Do you know how wildly prevalent autism is?" she wrote.
she notes her son is a fan of the rapper and calls on him to delete the tweets (which he did) or else: "If you’ve read your mentions today I am sure you have felt the wrath of autism parents. We are no joke. Neither is autism. We are not about to let you attempt to make "autistic" the new "R-word" under our watch."
While all the original tweets are gone, he followed up with a retweet of message from the mother of an autistic boy and then mentioned that woman directly, writing, "I would @Danicakes23 never talk about kids condition. People say all kinds of crazy things to me on twitter" Hey, there is a block button, you know.
