James Franco getting Oscar buzz for 'Spring Breakers' role
You want to hear the weirdest Oscar buzz since Gollum the CGI monster from Lord of the Rings? Word from Showbiz 411 is that James Franco is so good in the locally filmed Spring Breakers, Annapurna Pictures is planning a December releases strictly so he can be considered for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Yeah, forget sawing your own arm off with a pocketknife, here's a drug-dealing roustabout with cornrows for you to bet on at this year's Oscar pool.
The website says Harmony Korine's teen sex comedy is elevated to the Nth power by Franco's character, referred to as Alien. Catchy one-liners and gold grills will do that for a Serious Actor. He apparently was so good at it, there were rumors coming into The Juice* earlier this year that Franco would wander around St. Petersburg when the movie wasn't shooting in St. Pete Beach or Sarasota and people didn't recognize him. That's what we heard, anyway.
If this is really going to happen, Franco is up against some stiff competition. Showbiz 411 says the early contenders are Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master; Alan Arkin and John Goodman in Argo; Robert DeNiro in Silver Linings Playbook; and Jim Broadbent in Cloud Atlas. And that's just the people at the top of the list. But hey, what could be better than a spring break movie with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens being released at Christmastime? Makes perfect sense.
