James Van Der Beek explains that 'Dawson's Creek' crying thing

Since James Van Der Beek is back on TV with Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23, somebody finally had the gall to sack up and ask him once and for all, what was up with that crying in Dawson's Creek? Yes, The Juice* is firmly rooted in 2003, thank you.

In case you don't know, the scene we're referring to is the series finale, in which Van Der Beek's Dawson tells Katie Holmes' Joey she'd better leave him to go be with Joshua Jackson's Pacer instead of him (watch it below). He gave this overly dramatic teenager speech about needing true love and whatever, then started crying this silent cry that really made him look like a big wuss and led to ridicule the likes of which even Paul Reubens has never seen. There's now a website call to pay eternal tribute. Not that James minds.

"It wasn't scripted," Van Der Beek told the Huffington Post. "I remember being completely surprised by it because it was completely sincere. The fact that it's being used to mock me now, I think it's so funny." He says he really enjoys taking shots at himself now, doing Funny or Die videos or starring in Ke$ha's video for Blow.

"It's so much more fun to not take yourself so seriously. This is the kind of sense of humor I've always had," he said. Brother, The Juice* can testify you're speaking the truth.
