Jennifer Aniston uses the word "retard," angers PC camp
Forget that mess with Jennifer Aniston being ripped off by her hairdresser; the 41-year-old actress is in hot water herself now, after daring to use the word "retard" during an interview. Great, now we have to listen to all the stupid talking heads refer to it as "the R word" again.
While talking to the folks on Live with Regis and Kelly Thursday, Aniston was discussing dressing like Barbra Streisand in the new Harper's Bazaar when she made the cultural faux pas: "You're playing dress up," Regis Philbin said, to which she replied, "Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!" Well, okay, that was kind of dumb. And boy, did people notice.
"Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better," Peter Berns, CEO of non-profit advocate The Arc tells Us. "She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country. ... Even if it wasn't intended to insult them, that is the effect of it."
Kirsten Seckler, a spokesperson for the Special Olympics, adds: "People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it's hurtful." There's that "R word" business.
You know what's hurtful? The idea that anybody cares what Jennifer Aniston says. Then again, the real problem here is that Aniston continues to make double-digit millions for playing the same character in movies that don't perform. Hey, we loved Friends, too, but maybe the R word she should use is "retire."
