J.K. Rowling drops off Forbes billionaire list because she gave so much away
Forbes has released its annual list of billionaires, which doesn't mean much to people like The Juice* -- last week we were digging under Toddler Juice*'s crib mattress to find a spare nickel -- but there's some actual good news on there. Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling is off the list, because she gave too much of her money away. Read that sentence again and get some sleep tonight.
"New information about Rowlings' estimated $160 million in charitable giving combined with Britain's high tax rates bumped the Harry Potter scribe from our list this year," Forbes posted on its web site. Rowling was just last year listed as the world's first female billionaire, too. Nice of Forbes to make a dig about tax rates.
The author has been an outspoken proponent of charity, likely due that she once was a single mother on welfare, herself. She has given plenty to single-parent charities, and started her own called Lumos to help disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe.
"Large amounts of wealth bring a certain responsibility if you’re any kind of human being, then after you fulfil your family's needs, you think, well how do I do some good with this?" she told PhilanthropyUK.org awhile back. Looks like she really put her money where mouth is.
