Joaquin Phoenix mumbles to David Letterman
Seriously, what is going on with Joaquin Phoenix? His mumbling, monosyllabic appearance on Wednesday's Late Show with David Letterman is truly a sign of a guy who's a few bricks short of a full load (watch the video above).
Letterman, obviously perturbed by Phoenix's aloof manner, tried his best to draw out his reclusive guest, only to be rewarded with blank looks and snapping gum. At one point Letterman remarked about the gum chewing, so Phoenix took it out of his mouth and put it under Dave's desk. Classy.
The one earnest moment seemed to be when Letterman asked Joaquin what would happen now that the actor has given up Hollywood to focus on a supposed hip-hop career: "I don't know what will happen," he said. "Hmmm ... I don't know. It's not really easy to explain something that's been a part of my life for a long time and now is not."
Two Lovers director James Gray told People he had his own theory: "He's been doing it for 30 years. I think he ran out of juice. I just think he's exhausted." We're getting exhausted from all the questions about whether or not this is a joke or a cry for help.
Plus, did you see Gwyneth Paltrow at some screening of that flick in NYC on Wednesday? When did leather shorts and tights come back? Does that mean we can start tight-rolling our jeans again? Check it:
