Katherine Heigl says daughter Naleigh didn't like her
Everyone loves a happy baby story, so let's talk about how Katherine Heigl's adopted daughter Naleigh refused to bond with that actress when the 10-month-old was adopted from South Korea in 2009. Don't worry, it ends up being a happy story.
"People are always talking about the strong bond between mother and daughter, this magical connection, but we didn't have that," Heigl told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, People reports. It was "the hardest time in my life. ... I fought incredibly hard for my daughter to accept me as mother. Her rejection almost broke my heart."
In response, she started working even harder, which probably wasn't the best idea, so she "immediately cut back" on her acting jobs. It didn't help that Naleigh took to husband Josh Kelley before she bonded with Heigl. "At first I blamed myself and thought I was a bad mother. It took a while before I could admit to myself that the lack of trust had nothing to do with me," she said.
It all worked out, however, and now she and Naleigh are so close, Heigl's not even afraid to take her 4-year-old back to her homeland. "I'd like to fly to South Korea with the family, to show her the country that she comes from," she said. Yeah, 12 hours on a jumbo jet to Incheon with a 4-year-old? What a great idea!
