Katy Perry leads MTV Video Music Award nominations

Continuing to surprise us, MTV announced the nominees for the next Video Music Awards. Surprising, you see, because we had no idea they still showed videos.

Katy Perry scored a show-high nine nominations, including best female video and video of the year for Firework and best pop video for Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.). That seems like she's cheating a bit, given that she hosted MTV's announcement special on Wednesday night.

Adele and Kanye West both followed Katy up seven nominations each. Adele will compete with Perry for top video with Rolling in the Deep. Others video of the year hopefuls include the Beastie Boys for Make Some Noise; rapper Tyler, the Creator for Yonkers; and Bruno Mars for Grenade. Mars scored four nods, himself.

The rest of the award hopefuls include the usual suspects like Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Eminem, but not enough for us to really list them. Watch the awards on Aug. 28, because pop cultural watersheds used to happen on the show. It's not likely anymore, but anything's possible.
