Kelly Clarkson beats Carrie Underwood in sales of 'American Idol' singles
July 4 may have been Independence Day, but the biggest battle on Wednesday was won by Kelly Clarkson, who finally pulled ahead of fellow American Idol alum Carrie Underwood for the title of having the best-selling Idol single of all time. Truly, the history books will analyse this one for centuries.
Underwood's Before He Cheats was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 64 weeks after its release in 2006, selling 3,509,000 copies, the Hollywood Reporter says. That's not even including all the illegal downloads. But now Clarkson's Stronger, which topped 11 different Billboard charts since its release in January, weighed in with 3,510,000 copies. Take that, country music!
As far as the pair's overall sales tally, Underwood has sold 13.2 million albums to date, while Clarkson is coming up next at almost 11.7 million. Looks like Simon Cowell was right when he said Underwood would "sell more records than any previous Idol winner." But when you look at digital singles downloads, Clarksons ahead of the game: She's sold 24.1 million singles, while Underwood has moved a little more than 22.5 million. So she's got that going for her, too.
