Kiefer Sutherland begins jail sentence
The AP reports Sutherland was sentenced and immediately reported to the Glendale (Ca.) City Jail. Since he was ordered to complete the sentence by March 30, he could have reported as late as Feb. 12, but “Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody immediately,” attorney Blair Berk said.
Kiefer had pleaded no contest in October, the same plea he entered in 2004 to a misdemeanor DUI charge. In that case he got 50 hours of community service, an order to attend treatment and five years’ probation, which he violated when he was arrested leaving a party on Sept. 25.
Under the terms of this latest plea, he gets another five years of probation, must pay a $510 fine, enroll in an 18-month alcohol-education class and attend weekly alcohol-therapy sessions for six months, Assistant City Attorney Dan Jeffries said.
But while the rich and shameless like Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie served mere minutes and She Who Shall Not Be Named did a couple weeks, Kiefer will shore up his tough-guy cred by serving all 48 days in a 10 feet by 8 feet cell designed for two, although he’ll be getting a private suite.
“Anyone here for a long period of time will get their own cell,” Officer John Balian said. Sutherland will be classified as an “inmate worker,” spending time in the laundry room and kitchen.
“The fact that he’s a celebrity — he checked that at the door when he checked in,” Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams told TMZ. Gee maybe he should have been arrested by the L.A. County Sheriff instead.
