Killer of Jennifer Hudson's family gets three life sentences

William Balfour, the man convicted of killing Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, will spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced to three life terms, plus 120 years. So he won't be getting a new trial, Cook County circuit judge Charles Burns is saying.

Balfour faced a mandatory life sentence in the 2008 killings, the Chicago Tribune reports. He was married to Hudson's sister Julia, but killed Darnell Donerson, Jason Hudson and 7-year-old Julian King in a jealous rage instead. Julia had been dating another man while estranged from Balfour, who also was convicted of home invasion and aggravated kidnapping.

"My condolences go out to the family," Balfour said before sentencing. "My deepest sympathies go to Julian King. I loved him. I still love him." That certainly did not sit well with judge Burns.

"The fact that you can stand in court and tell us you love that child is an insult to all of us," Burns said. "There's no doubt in my mind he looked up to you as you were putting bullets into his head. I just hope his terror was short-lived."

Before the sentencing, Burns heard testimony from past victims of Balfour's previous crimes, including Charles Gardner, who testified he caught Balfour trying to steal his SUV in 1998. Gardner jumped on the roof rack and wenton a wild chase, during which Balfour drove as fast as 100 miles per hour in an attempt to shake Gardner off.

Balfour was caught and sentenced to a decade in prison. He was still on probation for the crime when he murdered Hudson's family members.
