Lawyer wants to sue 'American Idol' for being racist

A New York attorney has asked for permission to sue Fox and American Idol because he feels the show is racist for trying to humiliate black singers on the show. And you thought Idol was fine with embarrassing everyone during auditions.

James H. Freeman sent a letter to the Equal Opportunity Commission seeking permission to file a lawsuit after noticing Jermaine Jones was booted from the show in March 2012 after producers said Jones failed to mention he had outstanding warrants against him. Freeman noted what he called a "cruel and inhumane" plot by the show to exploit black talent and promote negative stereotypes, TMZ reports.

Freeman says Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju'Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9) also were African-Americans who had been subjected to the show's allegedly racist whims. He says no singers of other races were targeted by this plot, writing "NEVER once publicly disqualified a white or non-black American Idol contestant in the history of the eleven season production." Even the one who slept with Paula Abdul?

He also claims asking contestants if they had been arrested is a violation of California law because the singers are basically applying for a job on the show, so they can't be asked that. Freeman says that once the EEOC approves the request, he will file suit against the show.

Show boss Nigel Lythgoe called the allegations "ridiculous," telling the site, "We treat everybody the same ... no matter the race, religion or sex. I think we've always had a fantastic share of talent from contestants both black and white ... I don't think I've ever seen racism at the show." Heck, even William Hung found a modicum of success from his awful singing.
