Mackenzie Phillips defends dad; family reacts
Phillips said it was "a very permissive time and a very rock 'n' roll world and pretty much anything went." Her father "did the best he could," she said. That sort of negates the need for Father's Day presents, if that's the case.
"The instinct is to brush it under the table," Mackenzie said. "The instinct is to protect the abuser."
Meanwhile, her stepmother Michelle Phillips, who also was a member of the Mamas and the Papas, told the Hollywood Reporter that Mackenzie has to be out of her mind.
“I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah (Winfrey) should be more judicious about who she has on her show," Michelle said. ”Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently. She did Celebrity Rehab and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed. ... Mackenzie is jealous of her siblings, who have accomplished a lot and did not become drug addicts.”
At least one sibling, half-sister Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips, backs up her claim: "Do I believe that they had an incestuous relationship and that it went on for 10 years? Yes," she told Us.
