Mackenzie Phillips memoir admits incest with father

We all knew Mackenzie Phillips was a little off, but we never imagined that her was problem was having a sexual relationship with father John Phillips, leader of the Mamas and the Papas, which started with a drug-induced molestation on the night before her wedding when she was 19. We'll never be able to listen to California Dreamin' again.

"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it. I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed," the 49-year-old writes in her new memoir, High on Arrival. "My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.

"Had this happened before? I didn't know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout."

Phillips appeared in an interview on Wednesday's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss the matter, saying her siblings "definitely have a problem with this." O read a statement from Genevieve Waite, John Phillips' wife at the time of the alleged abuse and Mackenzie's stepmother that said he was "incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having such a relationship with his own child."

The One Day at a Time star, meanwhile, called the ensuing 10-year relationship "consensual," and said she ended it when she got pregnant and didn't know who the father of the baby was. John Phillips paid for an abortion and Mackenzie "never let him touch me again."

She told Oprah that drugs had been a problem since she was 11, when she first tried cocaine. Among other things, her dad did drugs with her, too, teaching her to roll joints and injecting her with coke. Mackenzie was arrested just last year at LAX during a drug bust, which has kept her clean for a year after going through drug treatment for pleading guilty to cocaine possession, the AP reports.

Phillips says she forgave her father on his deathbed, although the sexual relationship was "an abuse of power," she told Winfrey.

"I can't be the only one this has happened to," Phillips said. "Someone needs to put a face on consensual incest."
