Madonna gives up on Malawi girls school (sort of)
Madonna's plan to build a school for underprivileged girls in Malawi has been killed, but only because she plans on building several schools for more kids. Well, in a way, aren't most Malawian kids underprivileged?
The U.K.'s Sun says Madge has given up on an $18 million academy she was going to build, but wants to create several secondary schools in the same nation her adopted kids David Banda and Mercy James are from. Her Raising Malawi charity's site had a note that read she wants "to reach thousands, not hundreds of girls."
Don't think people aren't upset, though: Residents who gave up ancestral lands for the original school are miffed, and education minister Peter Mutharika said, "We'd like to know why she has changed."
Given the problems she had adopting her two kids and now all the guff she's getting about building schools in the impoverished nation, it's really making us wonder why she bothers to deal with that place at all. They sure don't seem to want her around.
