Madonna's school displacing 200 Malawi villagers
Madonna is proving she has a big ol' heart for Valentine's Day, agreeing to build a $15 million school for girls in Blantyre, Malawi. But she has just a tinge of Cruella de Ville about her, because it seems there are 200 residents that will have to be displaced in order to build the facility, the AP says. Hey, that's the only usable land in the whole country, we're sure.
Not that they want to leave. Lilongwe District Commissioner Charles Kalemba sided with Madge on this one, telling the villagers: "Government allowed you to occupy this land because there was no project yet. But now that Madonna wants to build you a school you have to give way. You are lucky that Madonna has compensated you for your houses, gardens and trees."
Apparently Madonna has given them $115,000 to compensate for their relocation to new government land, but the villagers aren't biting. Don't they know when a 51-year-old American woman demands something, you'd better jump?
