Mariah Carey will be a new judge on 'American Idol'
So much for Nick Cannon saying Fox can't afford his wife Mariah Carey; The network announced Monday that Mimi will be a new judge on American Idol next season. The final tally for her potential salary: As much as $17 million. That buys a lot of shoes for twins Morocco and Monroe.
"It's the biggest recording artist than any of these (singing competition) shows have ever had," Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said during a critics press tour on Monday, Entertainment Weekly says. Take that, Jennifer Lopez, Paula Abdul and Steven Tyler. "It's an artist many of these contestants have tried to emulate. (The deal) only concluded only hours ago. Not being the only game in town, we need to keep things fresh."
Carey herself was so excited, she dialed into the tour via speakerphone: "Yay! I am so excited to be joining Idol," she said. "I can't wait to get started in a couple of months."
Idol producers were looking high and low for a new judge after J.Lo wanted a raise on her $15 million second-year salary and Tyler jumped the gun and split to go back to Aerosmith. In the end, it looks like Randy Jackson being her manager paid off for Carey. We can now only guess who the second judge will be, although it's almost certainly a man. With a payday like Mariah is probably getting, you can forget about Justin Bieber right now -- unless Simon Cowell pilfers Carey for The X Factor, which he's been wanting to do, anyway.
