Mel Gibson has given his first interview since his infamous tirades and flying fists aimed at baby's mama Oksana Grigorieva, telling Deadline.com he feel regret about everything that has happened and he understands why people didn't come to his defense. He almost sounds like a rational human being.

Telling the site that "no one expressed any anger at him," Gibson says he didn't expect to be recorded, nor did he think the proper picture of himself come out in the media, but he takes responsibility for it.

"Who anticipates being recorded? Who anticipates that? Who could anticipate such a personal betrayal?" he says. "I've never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality -- period. I don't blame some people for thinking that though, from the garbage they heard on those leaked tapes, which have been edited. You have to put it all in the proper context of being in an irrationally, heated discussion at the height of a breakdown, trying to get out of a really unhealthy relationship. It's one terribly, awful moment in time, said to one person, in the span of one day and doesn’t represent what I truly believe or how I've treated people my entire life."

He thanks both Jodie Foster and Whoopi Goldberg for standing up for him, and understands why no one else came to his defense.

"That doesn't bother me. Why would anyone want to speak publicly and drag themselves through this crap? It seems to add fuel to the fire," he says. "Very many people are supportive, of course, but you find out who your friends are. I have many friends and they've been great."

So what's next for Mel? He begs off questions about pending legal issues with Grigorieva and says that after his next movie -- the Foster-directed The Beaver -- comes out, he already has projects in the works. He has his industry pals to thank for that.

"Guys like Robbie (CEO Rob Friedman) over at Summit (Entertainment) have been really nice. It didn't seem to bug those guys at all," Gibson says. "They were like, 'This is crap. We’re going out with this movie.' The next movie I'm in is How I Spent My Summer Vacation and it will have a distributor because we’re in the business of entertainment."
