Mexican singer El Shaka killed after denying murder rumors
Jinx of the day: Mexican singer El Shaka was gunned down Saturday, just hours after downplaying rumors that he had been murdered. That what you get for singing narcocorridos celebrating drug barons' exploits.
The 40-year-old singer, real name Sergio Vega, was driving his Cadillac to a concert in the state of Sinaloa when he was shot at then finished off execution-style, Billboard reports. He had just finished denying his death to website La Oreja, noting he had increased his personal security after a rash of musicians being murdered.
"It's happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I've been killed, or suffered an accident," Vega said. "And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her."
How many murders has the industry suffered? Well, there was singer Valentín Elizalde in November 2006, followed by 10 more deaths in the same year, including K-Paz de la Sierra leader Sergio Gomez. Four members of Herederos de Sinaloa were killed in an ambush the following year, and the drummer for Conjunto Atardecer was killed in 2009, the same year as producer Juan Carlos Casillas Castañeda. And here we thought drug dealers were the ones who were in danger in Mexico.
