Michael Douglas says 'the tumor is gone'

Good news, everyone: Michael Douglas has officially said he's beaten his cancer. That's right, even The Juice* needs a break from bad tidings once in awhile.

"I feel good, relieved," Douglas tells Matt Lauer on Today, in an interview that's slated to run Tuesday. "The tumor is gone. But, you know, I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain."

Douglas says he lost 32 pounds during chemotherapy to fight a tumor on the base of his tongue, but he's gained about 12 of them back, which is the only instance in which you'll hear a celebrity sounding happy about packing on some weight. He's also headed back to the gym, so he's feeling much better.

"The odds are, with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I've got it beat," he tells Lauer. The 66-year-old notes that the struggle has really put his life into perspective, which is pretty much a given in those circumstances.

"You know, maybe it has to do because of everything life threatening. So all of a sudden the affection from my family, from my friends, and from my fans hit me at a much deeper level than I would have ever imagined before," he says. "And it gave me a really new appreciation of just how valuable, how precious good friends are and family. And it's not that I disregarded them before but there's a much deeper feeling.  And I've talked to other cancer survivors about this, that -- that happens, that you just really, really appreciate what's important in life."

The entire interview will run Sunday on Dateline NBC. We now return you to our regularly scheduled celebrity ridicule.
