MTV names Katy Perry its artist of the year
While we're going to ignore the Golden Globe nominations (because eh, who cares about them?), there was an interesting announcement from MTV: Katy Perry is apparently their first artist of the year. Yes, they're giving away even more random awards these days.
Perry beat out Adele among a panel of so-called experts MTV collected to debate the subject, the AP reports. Adele did get top song of 2011 with Rolling In The Deep, though. MTV's chief of music programming Amy Doyle -- now that's a job that probably isn't too rigorous these days -- says the network wanted a new awards franchise that focused on music, so they collected seven panelists to decide on such matters. Ironically, they were shown discussing things this week on the network in lieu of actual music videos.
Skrillex beat out David Guetta for the title of electronic dance music artist of the year. Adele's song topped Nicki Minaj's Super Bass and Rihanna's We Found Love. Perry got her prize because she tied Michael Jackson's record of five No. 1 singles from one album (his album being Bad).
And as a cursory nod to its viewers, MTV asked people to choose the best live performance shown on the network all year, and they picked Hurricane by Thirty Seconds to Mars. Take that, Beyonce.
