Nude photo of Madonna may fetch $10,000
Christie's auction house is saying that a 30-year-old photo of Madonna that once showed up in a 1985 issue of Playboy is expected to bring at least $10,000, the AP reports. Haven't they heard that there's a recession right now?
Madonna Louise Ciccone, a 20-year-old dancer at the time, earned as little as $25 for a 1979 modeling session with photographer Lee Friedlander, who solicited nude models in a newspaper ad. Christie's photo dept. head Matthieu Humery said that six photos from the shoot were sold to the skin mag, but the one up for auction was "maybe the most explicit one." Yeah, that's worth 10 Gs.
"For Friedlander it is a very typical way of taking pictures of a woman," Humery said. "He likes very natural women. It reflects Friedlander's aesthetic. There's not a hint of glamorizing. That's what makes it powerful."
He said he knows of no other prints of the black-and-white photo, which hits the block on Feb. 12, but the other five shots from that group were sold in 2003 for $7,170. It makes us wonder how much nude photos of the now-50 year old performer would bring. We have a nickel, a stick of gum and some pocket lint to start the bidding.
