Peter Jackson returns to the Shire

Tuesday was already poised to be a great day in nerd-dom, with the release of The Simpsons Movie on DVD. Then it was announced that Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached a deal to make J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit into a pair of blockbuster prequels to the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Jackson will produce The Hobbit, with a director to be named later. Two Hobbit films will be produced simultaneously, with the first to be released in 2010. The director and New Line have been feuding over the film’s $3-billion gross, but were able to hammer out an agreement. “We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth,” Jackson said. And with that, geeks around the world commenced wetting their Spider-Man underpants.
