President Obama names Shakira to advisory committee

President Barack Obama has added some star power to his advisory committe, appointing Shakira to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the Miami Herald says. Wow, how is some Grammy-winning Colombian pop singer qualified to do that? All she has is a philanthropic foundation, cross-continent appeal and the ability to speak six languages.

The 34-year-old, referred to in press materials as Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, or Ms. Mebarak Ripoll, started the Barefoot foundation in 1995, which operates educational projects and facilities in Colombia, South Africa and Haiti, and worked with the World Bank last year to develop educational programs for Latin America. She also help found the Latin america in Solidarity Action, served as honorary chair of Global Action Week and in 2003 was named a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

Oh, she also performed at Obama's inaugural celebration with Stevie Wonder, Usher and U2, so she's no stranger to the White House. There were three other people named to the committee, but eh, nobody cares about them, unless one was Eva Longoria or George Lopez.
