Prince may have to pay perfume maker $3.9 million
Prince's perfume 3121 is turning out to be pretty expensive, since a judge has awarded the scent's maker $3.9 million after they sued the Purple One and Universal Music Publishing Group for failing to promote the line. That's odd; you'd think people would have jumped at the chance to smell like Prince.
An arbiter in Manhattan awarded the amount after finding both the musician and Universal reneged on a 2006 agreement with Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics that Prince would provide interviews and promotional assistance for the scent, which was named after Prince's album, the New York Law Journal reports. The referee denied Revelations' request for $3.4 million in lost profits, however, calling that too "speculative."
Revelations will now wait and see if a New York judge will confirm the award, which Prince's lawyers are obviously fighting. And just imagine, this is after the arbiter refused to award punitive damages. Never heard of the scent? Well, that's just proving Revelations' point, isn't it?
