Regis Philbin is retiring from 'Live' this year
Regis Philbin has decided that it's time to call it quits on the whole daily TV show thing, announcing on Tuesday's Live! With Regis and Kelly that he's ending his run this year. He must have decided that hitting 80 soon was a sign.
"This will be my last year on this show," Regis said (watch the video above). "It's been a long time. It's been 28 years since I've been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life. ... There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people." He noted that he would retire near "the end of the summer or fall," just in time for sweeps, no doubt.
Kelly Ripa had warm wishes for her cohost, saying, "I can only speak for America and all of us here: It has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true and I wish I could do something to make you change your mind." Don't say things like that -- he might end up pulling a Dick Clark and hanging on way too long, making us sad every morning. We don't want that.
