Rihanna was apparently the victim in alleged Chris Brown assault
The LAPD arrested the 19-year-old on suspicion of making criminal threats to Rihanna, (full name: Robyn Rihanna Fenty), just hours before the pair were scheduled to perform successively at the show. Neither star made it to the awards show, forcing last-minute changes to the program. Al Green filled in for the pair, but wasn't told why they were absent.
"I was in the shower and didn't have anything on, and they said, 'Whatever you have, throw it in the bag and come on,' " Green said backstage. "We had two hours and 40 minutes to rehearse, come back onstage and change and then go out and do it."
Brown and Rihanna, 20, had driven through the L.A. neighborhood of Hancock Park in a rented Lamborghini around 12:30 a.m. Sunday following a Grammy party in Beverly Hills. They apparently started arguing when Brown stopped the car and the couple got out.
"She got out of the car to walk home. He got out to stop her," a source told the New York Daily News. "Things got physical. He hit her, possibly more than once. She had multiple bruises."
The police report says the victim -- who was identified by sources familiar with the incident as Rihanna, the Times says -- suffered visible injuries to her face and ID'd Chris Brown as the attacker. A witness called 911, but by the time cops arrived, Brown had left. He turned himself in two hours after the Grammys started.
Another source for the Daily News says Brown's wandering eyes were the start of the fight: "Apparently, Rihanna accused him of checking out other women at Clive Davis' party. It seems she's taking the steps you'd need to take if you were going to press charges. But she could wake up tomorrow morning and decide she still loves him."
Brown was booked and released on $50,000 bail after the end of the show. He faces additional charges when the case is brought before the DA. A preliminary court date is set for March 5.
