Roy Scheider dies in Little Rock at 75
Actor Roy Scheider, best known for his role as the police chief in the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, died Sunday at a hospital in Little Rock, Ark., after being treated the past two years for multiple myeloma. He was 75.
Known for uttering one of the best-known movie lines of the last 35 years (“You’re gonna need a bigger boat”), Scheider reprised his role in the semi-decent sequel Jaws 2, and had the good sense to escape the franchise before the stinkfests that were Jaws 3-D and Jaws: The Revenge.
Though he achieved enduring fame with his role in Jaws, his acting chops extended well beyond battling 25-foot sharks. He was twice nominated for Academy Awards — for his 1971 role as a tough street cop in The French Connection, and as director Bob Fosse in All That Jazz (1979).
His death leaves only Richard Dreyfuss alive among Jaws’ shark hunting trio: Robert Shaw died in 1978.
