Russell Crowe may get job as Superman's dad Jor-El in 'Man of Steel'
If there's one role that would be nearly impossible to cast in a way that would live up to expectations in the forthcoming Superman update, Man of Steel, it has to be Jor-El, the father of the titular character played by Marlon Brando in the 1978 version of the movie. But a choice has finally been made, and would you believe it's ... Russell Crowe?
Variety says the 47-year-old Australian is in talks to play Kal-El's forward-thinking papa, which is an unexpected choice, but still better than other names being bandied about, like Sean Penn and Clive Owen (although Clive wouldn't be the worst, in hindsight). Hopefully he'll channel some of that commanding, Gladiator-style voice projection for the cause. Warner Bros. wouldn't confirm the news, but if Variety's saying it, it has a better than 50 percent chance of being right.
They're also looking for a woman to play Superman's supermama, Lara (Susannah York in 1978). She didn't get much to say in the first movie, but she made up for it in the second one -- although she was unable to convince her stupid son to not give up his superpowers for a nicotine-stained tomboy like Lois Lane. Maybe the new actress will do better.
