Ryan Reynolds gave Denzel Washington a black eye
Ryan Reynolds is, by all accounts, a pretty nice guy; even ex-wife Scarlett Johansson agrees to that. But the friendly fellow did something no other actor has ever done: He gave Oscar winner Denzel Washington a black eye on the set of Safe House in South Africa. That's not how you endear yourself to the A list, Ryan.
"I've never had a black eye in my life!" Washington, 57, told People. "There's a scene where I reach over to try to choke him while I have handcuffs on. We were flying around in the car. It just happened that as I was reaching forward he was flying back ... and POW."
Ryan and Denzel, who play a CIA agent and fugitive, respectively, apparently get into a lot of scraps in the movie, but this was a big deal for the 35-year-old actor.
"That was my early retirement," Reynolds said. "I've given Denzel Washington a black eye and I should probably go home. ... I'm glad I was your first," he told Washington. "If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian." Indeed, doing something Ethan Hawke couldn't do in that Training Day fight scene is quite an accomplishment.
