Ryan Seacrest meets with NBC to discuss replacing Matt Lauer on 'Today'
There have long been rumblings at NBC that Matt Lauer is planning on leaving the Today show when his contract is up at the end of next year, so the network is reportedly scrambling to find a backup host. The big name getting thrown about by every legitimate news source in the country? Ryan Seacrest. Let's just pause to reflect on that for a second.
A story in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday says sources confirm Seacrest met with executive producer Jim Bell, network news president Steve Capus and senior marketing VP Lauren Kapp on Tuesday evening. The Hollywood Reporter's sources say the same thing, so it's gotta be true. That may shade whether he decides to renew his contract as anchor and managing editor of E! News next year.
Every story is quick to say this is a preliminary meeting and nothing is set in stone, but just think about it: Lauer actually was a journalist, even though Today is hardly what you call a hard-hitting investigative news magazine. Seacrest has hosted American Idol, stolen New Years Rockin' Eve from Dick Clark and shoved the Kardashians down our throats. Do we really want to see him every single morning?
