Sam Lutfi claims Britney Spears was high on crystal meth

Britney Spears' former manager Sam Lutfi is contending the pop singer was a meth head who was high all the time and blamed it on him back when she was going through what could appropriately be called the Blackout years. We never thought it'd be meth; we were thinking more cocaine.

Lutfi's attorney Joseph Schleimer made the assertion Thursday during opening arguments of Lutfi's libel trial against Britney and her family, contending chapters of her mother Lynne's book Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World made him out to be a commander of the paparazzi and a control-obsessed sadist. In fact, Schleimer told the jury in L.A., he was being used as a shield for the singer, the AP reports.

"My client was made a scapegoat for drug abuse and erratic behavior of Britney Spears," Schleimer said, bringing up the accusation that Spears was high on meth the night she was taken into protective custody back in January 2008. "He was terrified of being her manager when she overdosed."

Britney is not expected to testify at the trial and hasn't been deposed, but she has purchased an $8.5 million mansion in Thousand Oaks, Calif., to share with fiancee Jason Trawick. He also used to be her manager, you know.

Lutfi also contends he tried to make Britney go to a psychiatrist and that she shaved her head to erase traces of drug use. He is suing for millions of dollars, claiming he is entitled to a portion of the profit from her album Blackout, for which he says he was largely responsible. You mean the one where she was so zoned out she couldn't even perform at the MTV Video Music Awards? You really want to take credit for that?
