Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, Benicio del Toro in 'Three Stooges'
We can't tell if this is the pinnacle of Tinseltown glamor or the shockingly worst idea we've ever heard, but Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio del Toro may be joining Peter and Bobby Farrelly in a big-screen adaptation of The Three Stooges. Jaws off the floor, please.
MGM obtained the rights to a film version of the 1930s shorts, the Hollywood Reporter says, and has packaged Penn as Larry with Carrey, who is in talks to be Curly. Del Toro is a rumored third pick as Moe, because that makes perfect sense.
With that kind of talent you'd expect a heavy-handed biopic, but no, it will be a slapstick penned by the Farrelly brothers. It's supposed to follow the Stooges since they're childhood in an orphanage, which THR says will employ Benjamin Button-style effects to put the actors' heads on kids' bodies. And weary moviegoers at home in front of their DVRs.
