Selena Gomez is headed to the Congo for UNICEF
It's pretty hard to hate on Disney Child StarBot Model No. 331498, a.k.a. Selena Gomez, even if she is dating Justin Bieber and is lining up movie projects. That's because the 19-year-old is getting ready to take a humanitarian trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So much for that vacation to Hawaii.
"We first went to Ghana and then we went to Chile," the UNICEF ambassador to E!'s Marc Malkin. "In April, we're going to go somewhere a little harder, the Congo ... The first trips were to ease me into it. I was talking to Joel Madden and he works with UNICEF and he went to the Congo. He said it was the most intense thing he had ever done in his entire life — and the best thing he had ever done."
Gomez already has done work for the Congo, E! says, appearing at the Raise Hope for the Congo charity event in L.A. in 2009 to promote awareness of rape and sexual assault in the war-torn nation. She's been an ambassador for UNICEF for two years; in fact, her discussion with Marc was at a House of Blues benefit for the organization on Friday. Apparently she's not letting the end of Wizards of Waverly Place get her down.
