A sequel to 'Goonies': Good idea or bad?
When Corey Feldman insists a sequel to Goonies is in the works — like he did in August — we usually roll our eyes and ask if he’s having some sort of drug-induced flashback to his popular days. But now that made-it-big-as-a-hobbit co-star Sean Astin says Goonies 2 is an “absolute certainty,” we sit up and take notice.
“The writing’s on the wall when they’re releasing the (Goonies) DVD in such numbers,” MTV reports. All that’s holding things up now (besides good taste and a respect for nostalgia) is a storyline. “Steven (Spielberg) and Dick (Donner) and all the powers that be … they really feel like the thing that made the movie strong was that it was about kids, so they really want to make the next movie about kids … the next generation of Goonies. And they’ve had a hard time tackling that,” Astin said.
The obvious move in making a sequel would involve the original kids’ children, the actor said.
“I have three children and Corey’s got a kid now," he said. "So as we now all have kids who are coming into the age that we were when we made the movie, it’s more likely to me that they’ll figure out how to design a story that will satisfy the older audience in terms of connecting with the original 1985 Goonies, and then create this new thing.”
That’s great, Sean, but none of it answers the important stuff, like why trash another childhood memory?
