'Shape' editor apologizes for LeAnn Rimes cover

tbd-leannrimes110110.jpgIt's not often a print editor apologizes for a choice that was made (The Juice* can attest to that), but Shape honcho Valerie Latona gave a big mea culpa for deciding to put LeAnn Rimes on the cover of the October issue. But get this: It's not because of Rimes' music, but because she is seen as having stolen Eddie Cibrian from his wife, Brandi Glanville. Hey, Angelina Jolie still gets magazine covers.

"You are all in good company (why I'm e-mailing you all together) as you all agree Shape has made a terrible mistake in putting LeAnn Rimes on the cover," Latona said in an e-mail to subscribers. "Please know that our putting her on the cover was not meant to put a husband-stealer on a pedestal—but to show (through her story) how we all are human. And this woman in particular found strength in exercise in what she said was her most difficult personal moment. But it did not come across that way... And for that I'm terribly sorry."

Of course, Latona told E! that she was addressing a mere 40 complaints out of 6 million readers and that her "comments have been taken out of context," but apologizing for a cover model is showing weakness. (TMZ says Glanville was arrested early Friday morning for DUI, so she was obviously upset, too.) Now the sharks smell blood in the water, and they're going to keep coming after her. You're going to need a bigger boat, Valerie!
