Sharon Osbourne reveals she had a double mastectomy
Sharon Osbourne has revealed to Hello magazine that she has pre-emptively undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer. The 60-year-old grandmother said she decided on the operation after learning she carried a gene considered a marker for developing the form of the disease.
"As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: 'The odds are not in my favour,'" Osbourne said. "I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud: I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy."
Sharon said she planned on having the 13-hour procedure not long after her son Jack's daughter was born.
"For me, it wasn't a big decision, it was a no-brainer," she told the magazine. "I didn't want to live the rest of my life with that shadow hanging over me. I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to Pearl. I didn't even think of my breasts in a nostalgic way, I just wanted to be able to live my life without that fear all the time. It's not 'pity me', it’s a decision I made that's got rid of this weight that I was carrying around."
To make things just a bit worse, she found out her breast implants had leaked into her stomach wall after she was examined by doctors. That pretty much puts her off plastic surgery forever, too. But if this woman could survive 30 years of being married to Ozzy, we figure she's capable of handling this, too.
