Sharpton, Def Jam at odds
The New York Post also reports that the Rev. Al Sharpton’s annual National Action Network convention hit a snag on Wednesday when Universal Music Group demanded the return of a $15,000 donation to the Manhattan event. The row started because Sharpton had previously refused to hand out an award to Def Jam’s L.A. Reid (Def Jam is a Universal label). Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons didn’t attend Wednesday’s dinner, either, dropping out on two tables priced at $10,000 each. And why won’t Sharpton give out the award? Because Reid oversees “a stable of foul-mouthed singers, including the notorious Ludacris,” the paper writes. “I’ve been against the lyrics all along,” Sharpton said.
