Snoop Dogg changes his name to Snoop Lion
Say goodbye to Snoop Dogg, because the 40-year-old rapper has renamed himself Snoop Lion. He's gonna need a new passport and everything.
The erstwhile Calvin Broadus told reporters at a press conference at Miss Lily's in New York on Tuesday that he experienced a cultural and spiritual rebirth while working on his new album Reincarnated in Jamaica last February, the New York Times reports. "I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated," he said, with Bob's son Rohan assenting. "I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn’t have my third eye open, but it's wide open right now." Well, he's always smoked that nickel like one, anyway.
Snoop, who is releasing the album, a coffee table book and a documentary about the experience, said he wanted to write and perform songs he could sing in front of his children and grandchildren, and G'z Up Hoes Down certainly doesn't fit that bill. But is he giving up on rap for good?
"Rap is not a challenge to me," he said. "I had enough of that. It's not appealing to me no more. I don't have no challenges. I'm 'Uncle Snoop' in rap. When you get to be an uncle, you need to find a new profession so you can start over and be fresh again. I want to be a kid again." Because rapping and smoking weed for 20 years is exceptionally hard work.
