The stars come out for Barack Obama's big day

Tbddenzel012109_2 Denzel Washington was going to be sure he got to enjoy President Barack Obama's inauguration up close, getting his seat at the Capitol bright and early on Tuesday.

Other celebs were in the house, with Oprah Winfrey, Sting, Michael Stipe, Jay Z and Beyonce Knowles wandering around. After the show you could find those last two with Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill and Mary J. Blige at the Neighborhood Ball at the Washington Convention Center, the New York Post said.

Indeed, pulling off an inauguration takes a lot of balls, as Sting then joined Elvis Costello at the Creative Coalition gala at the Hartman Center, while Dionne Warwick hosted the Legends Ball and Ludacris emceed the Urban Ball, both at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. Rihanna was the headliner at the Recording Industry of America Inaugural Ball.

Cyndi Lauper, Melissa Etheridge and Rufus Wainwright were on the list at the Equality Ball at the Mayflower Hotel. Over at the Smithsonian Postal Museum, the Inaugural Peace Ball was featuring Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez, Graham Nash and Jackson Browne.

The big show was the Purple Ball at the Fairmont Hotel, where the guest list boasted Lou Gossett Jr., Ashley Judd, Patricia Arquette, John Cusack, Ed Harris, Brendan Fraser, Susan Sarandon and Lisa Marie Presley, the Post reported. Expect to see nothing but photos of these events for the rest of the week.
