Starz ending 'Spartacus' after one more season

Another popular TV series is biting the dust, with Starz announcing Monday it will end Spartacus after a third and final season (not counting the prequel Gods of the Arena). It's not because of ratings though -- the show's 6 million viewers is a smash hit for a cable series. Way more than the 3 million or so Mad Men gets, at any rate.

Creator-executive producer Steven S. DeKnight told the Hollywood Reporter that the final season, which will feature 10 episodes, has already been planned out and is in production. He doesn't seem at all upset about ending the run, either. "How long do you run a show? Do you run it until you can squeeze every last bit of revenue out of it, or do you end it on a high note? That was part of the decision to wrap up the show: The idea of ending the show when you're on top and the audience still wants more instead of dragging it out until it starts to wane and you kind of limp to the finish line."

Well, we know Rome didn't fall and lots of rebels were crucified, so it's possible this next round -- called War of the Damned, appropriately -- will end on a pretty dour note. But hey, after all those people died in Vengeance, it's not like you're not used to it.
