Stephen King wants your blood ... for a blood drive in Sarasota and Manatee counties
A blood bank just south of Tampa Bay is benefitting from the endorsement of one famous local resident, as Stephen King has spoken out for Suncoast Communities Blood Bank in Sarasota and Manatee counties. And if there's one snowbird who knows about blood, it's Stephen King.
"In 1999, people I'd never met helped save my life," the horror writer says in a PSA for the bank, referring to the time he as hit by a minivan and almost died. "I'm a blood donor now and give as often as I can at Suncoast Communities Blood Bank." The video is part of 40 "Boots vs. Badges" blood drives through Aug. 2, in which police and firefighters compete to bring in the most donors (watch it above).
King is a part-time Casey Key resident, whom last made The Juice* when he spoke out against Gov. Rick Scott in March during an Awake the State rally. He has donated an autographed copy of The Shining as a prize for the drives, so pick a cop or a firefighter you like and say they sent you so you can win it. More information is at www.scbb.org. You'll have to head south of Hillsborough for it to count, though.
