Stewie wins one for crudeness
The comedienne had sued the show because she felt the writers disparaged her after she wouldn’t allow them to use the theme music from the long-running Carol Burnett Show. An episode showed her famous “Charwoman” cleaning lady working in a porn shop and implied she had a rather inappropriate relationship with her father. (See clip below)
U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson said he didn’t see how any harm could have been done to Burnett, and noted that parody is protected speech.
“In the new media, any self-imposed restraint essentially has been eliminated, Pregerson said. “Public figures, such as Ms. Burnett, are frequent targets of parodies and crude innuendo.”
And besides, Burnett herself made a career out of parodying people, so she’ll just have to choke this one down.
