Tom Cruise befriended Australian businessman at a very low point
The Juice* has never really doubted that Tom Cruise is a nice guy in person, but an Australian businessman said some things on TV down under that made us really wish we were on the guy's Christmas card list. That's because he apparently has people over for skiing trips and talks them through tough times. All you have to do is listen to his Scientology pitches.
James Packer told Australian TV show Sunday Night that Cruise came to his rescue years ago when Packer's cell phone company One.Tel was floundering. "When I was at my lowest, Tom Cruise reached to to me. He believed in me when other people didn't," Packer said.
Packer added that he was mired in depression when he took up Scientology after the big-name actor took great interest in him around 2002.
"om Cruise reached out to me and it was a surreal thing," Packer said. "I'd met him once or twice … and he was in Australia and we got together. I think he could tell that I was in pain. He invited me to go to his house to go skiing with him at Christmas." That went on every Christmas, especially after One.Tel went bankrupt and Cruise spent a couple of weeks with him.
"And he never asked me for anything, in our entire life," Packer said, noting he's since left Scientology. "He believed in me when other people didn't. I'm very grateful. I just think he’s a very special person."
We can only speculate what sparked this friendship, but as a reward for Tom, we will plug his next movie and say Oblivion looks great, even though we think we already know what the big plot twist is. We'll have to go see it to find out if we're right, though.
