Tom Cruise will play 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jack Reacher in 'One Shot'
Tom Cruise may actually have been able to pull off a passable version of Lestat in the film adaptation of Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire years ago, but this one may be a bit tougher: The diminutive lead actor has been tapped to play mystery novel hero Jack Reacher in a Paramount port of Lee Child's novel One Shot. So what if Jack is described as being 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds? Tom's ego is at least twice that.
"Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way," Child says about the casting, likely holding his licensing check from Paramount in front of his face the whole time. Cruise can do that in his own way, which is usually by squinting and breathing through his mouth a lot (he's about 5-foot-7 and 150, by the way).
Reacher is the protagonist of a series of books by child featuring the former military policeman -- this one is apparently about a sniper who shoots people with, well, one shot. Deadline.com says the deal is real, and shooting with director Christopher McQuarrie starts in the fall. Whether there's any more of these depends largely on whether fans of the book series continue to revolt against the idea.
