tbd-tommymottola010913.jpgFormer Sony Music exec Tommy Mottola makes one thing clear in his new memoir: His ex-wife Mariah Carey will never, ever be free of him completely. And why should she, since he's the one who made her famous?

The New York Post says Mottola's new book, Hitmaker, which comes out Jan. 15, he was sure to point out he was sorry about their tumultuous marriage from 1993 to 1997. "If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize," he wrote. "Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success."

That obsessive nature came through in his desire to possess the then-23-year-old singer. The book details her well-publicized near-imprisonment in their Bedford, N.Y., mansion, which she referred to as "Sing Sing" because she was an imprisoned songbird. There's an entire section in the book about how he demanded to pair her with aging stars like Billy Joel, Daryl Hall and John OatesGloria Estefan and Michael Jackson, while she wanted to do more hip-hop-oriented songs. We see who was right about that marketing.

And while Mottola gloats he was right to make her record her Christmas album, which has sold 20 million copies to date, there are some chilling details about the wedding, which one guest referred to as "a coronation." Carey allegedly watched Princess Diana's wedding just so she could better it, making her train 27 feet instead of 25, and having 50 flower girls to Di's 5. Wait, who's the obsessive one here?

Tommy also says he noticed his 12-year-old daughter crying and hugging her 13-year-old brother, the only detail he really recalls about the wedding. It stood out because the kids understood that Mottola's marriage was doomed. "They knew in their bones what I simply couldn't feel," Mottola wrote. so could the rest of us, Tommy; Your kids are observant, not psychic.
