Ukrainian singer says Carly Rae Jepsen stole 'Call Me Maybe'
A Ukrainian singer named Aza is suing girl next door Carly Rae Jepsen for allegedly swiping the hook for Top 40 megahit Call Me Maybe from her own skankfest English-language song, Hunky Santa. That's right. No, we don't think anything was lost in translation there.
TMZ says Jepsen's producers stole the track and put down Carly's voice, so she's seeking unspecified damages. "I'm shocked and surprised that these people wanted to sample my lyrics on their song," Aza told the site. "They didn't ask me for permission, they just took it. That's why I filed this lawsuit. When I first heard it on the radio, I was driving and almost got into an accident. I couldn't believe what I was hearing." School Boy Records honcho Scooter Braun, who also minds the store for Justin Bieber, is named in the suit, as well.
"This is completely false and (Carly's) lawyers will deal with this. Everyone knows (Carly) is a songwriter. She is not spending a lot of time listening to Ukrainian radio," Jepsen's rep told TMZ. Great, now they went and insulted Ukrainians even more. When will it end? As for the songs, listen to them both here and puzzle over whether there's even remote similarities, because we're not finding any. Maybe the lyrics are similar, but who can tell?
