Universal has had enough with Carl Rinsch, the director of the upcoming Keanu Reeves epic 47 Ronin, so they've canned Rinsch before he attempted to edit that mess together. Hey, Superman II turned out all right after Richard Donner was fired, didn't it?

Studio co-chair Donna Langley is in charge of the editing process now, and will have to find someone to help pull the entire story together. TheWrap.com says Rinsch may have cracked under the pressure of his first feature film -- he made his name doing commercials for BMW and Heineken -- and let the $175 million budget spiral out of control to a rumored $225 million.

The Director's Guild of America had union rules preventing Universal from firing Rinsch before physical production and reshoots are done, but once he finished reshooting the ending the studio dropped him like a bad, money-losing habit. The movie is based on a Japanese historical event about 18th century samurai avenging their dead leader, but this version features Reeves and at least one CGI monster, so good luck to whomever has to take over now.
