We don't see 'Voltron' beating the odds

Tbdvoltron081307 So jealous are studios of Michael Bay’s success with giant, CGI robots in Transformers that there’s talk of a deal between New Regency and Mark Gordon Co. to adapt Voltron: Defender of the Universe into a live-action flick, Variety reports.

Most children of the 80s are familiar with the anime series — which features five humans piloting five lion-shaped robots that combine to form one giant, human-shaped robot — and Gordon has been trying to get the idea off the ground for a couple years.

But desperate for a hit, 20th Century Fox-based New Regency is looking for a franchise with legs. They sure aren’t going to get it with their upcoming pictures, with Alvin and the Chipmunks and Eddie Murphy’s Starship Dave leading the pack for a studio that brought you Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Gordon allegedly is working on a script set in a post-apocalyptic NYC and Mexico, which will distract him from his script work for the upcoming He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Street Fighter, both of which were already done (and done poorly) a few years ago. We’re seeing a trend here ...
