'You Light Up My Life' songwriter Joseph Brooks found dead in apparent suicide

tbd-josephbrooks052411.jpgJoseph Brooks, the Oscar-winning songwriter of Debbie Boone's 1977 hit You Light Up My Life, was found dead in his New York apartment Sunday of an apparent suicide. He had been awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting 13 women, so there may be an obvious reason why.

The 73-year-old was found on his couch by a friend coming to his place for lunch, the AP reports. Brooks had a plastic bag around his head, with a hose from a helium tank attached to the bag. Police found a three-page suicide note in which Brooks complained about his health; he suffered a stroke in 2008.

He pleaded not guilty in 2009 to charges of luring women to his apartment from an online ad, drugging them and sexually assaulting them. His 24-year-old son Nicholas, meanwhile, has been charged with killing his girlfriend, Peruvian-American swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay. Maybe Joseph just couldn't handle another visit to see his son at Riker's Island, where Nicholas is being held without bail.
